WebSounds like a nile monitor to me, they do have some similar "dotted" pattern to tegus. I have personally seen monitors cause massive damage. It was probably brumating and he scared the hell out of it. I know Florida has a huge reptile problem. I would suggest calling animal control to see if it's still there before it gets someone else.
