WebFeb 20, 2016 · Scientists at the University of Southampton have developed a 5D glass disc that can store 360 Terabytes of data for billions of years. The discs are made out of nanostructured glass, and the data is stored and retrieved using femtosecond laser writing. WebA new 5D optical storage technique developed at the University of Southampton would allow 500TB of data to be stored on an optical storage disc for 13.8 billion years. The new writing method uses lasers to write at 230 kbps, taking 2 months to fill the disc with 500TB.

WebNov 2, 2024 · Well, technically, it’s 13.8 billion years, but for all intents and purposes, that’s pretty much indefinitely. Researchers at the University of Southampton have developed a new technique that could allow up to 500TB of data to be written to a CD-sized “5D” glass disc. For comparison, CD-Rs store 650MB of data.
Webexcept, at 230KB/s, it would take ~69 years to fill 500 TB. 500 tb *1000gb/tb * 1000mb/gb * 1000kb/mb = 500e9 KB 500e9 KB / 230KB/s = 2,173,913,043 sec = 603,865 hours = 25161 …
